That's true bill but if a client asks for a desktop site then sure I will promote mobile design, after all it is beneficial to me too, but ultimately it is their decision. It makes no sense to go in straight away with a quote for 600 to include mobile as some people dont see/understand the benefits of it. Mobile will cost extra in any situation so it will always hold an extra charge. I guess it is just an extreme statement to make saying anyone who designs a site that isnt mobile friendly is a thief, lots of customers want only this believe it or not!

I liked your seminar at the expo by the way, it was presented differently to the normal stuffy way of presenting which we become used to at events like that.

You bill for what you build John. That is more than reasonable. Price the jb as a mobile job and bill £600, because £500 will not get the job done as needed. Don't recommend and build what is going to become redundant tech very quickly.

Hi Bill, I have to respond to your comment saying that 'anything that isn’t built mobile first just isn’t worth buying, and the person selling it to you is akin to a thief'.

I am web developer and designer and heard you say the same thing at the recruitment expo earlier this year.

The development time alone for adding mobile responsive capability or a seperate mobile site inevitably means extra cost to the client. Therefore lets say a standard desktop site costs £500, a site that is also responsive to mobile would easily be an extra £100 due to the coding, planning and different layout considerations. Therefore any designer who was pitching a new website to you would automatically tell you a total of £600 if you wanted it responsive for mobile so it is always going to be 'extra' to the price of a desktop equivalent.

For us to work many extra hours adding responsive coding for nothing would be akin to you saying you will go and speak at the expo 2014 for 2 days and only bill them for one, I doubt that would happen and rightly so.

I'd be interested to hear any thoughts you had on this.

[...] The last one is from my blog, The Recruiting Unblog. It is my most viewed post, and a story I get asked about at least once a day. This is the story of how we worked with Hard Rock Café when they were staffing their new venue in Florence, Italy, and successfully hired 120 people in 4 weeks, carrying out the whole process–end to end–from within Facebook. I don’t know of any other campaign that has matched this. You can read this, and the other two parts of the story HERE. [...]
